Safety

Spain has a very low rate of violent crime. Nonetheless, minor crimes such as pick-pocketing, robbery, and theft from cars are a problem. Thieves often attempt to distract their victims by squirting mustard on their clothing, asking directions on the street, or otherwise diverting their attention. The American Embassy in Madrid has issued a notice to U.S. citizens that is frequently receives reports of roadside thieves posing as "good Samaritans" to persons experiencing car and tire problems. The Embassy notice advises drivers to be extremely cautious about accepting help from anyone other than a uniformed Spanish police officer or Civil Guard. Civil disorder in Spain is rare. Although a few small terrorist groups are occasionally active, their efforts are primarily directed against police, military, and other Spanish government targets. Americans have not been targets of these attacks.

Leave expensive jewelry and other valuables at home.

Make photocopies of all important documents- - passport, airplane tickets. Leave one set at home in the USA and one at home in Spain.

Use money belts, holster wallets, or pouches that can be hidden under clothing. Fanny packs are not recommended.

Keep wallets, keys, and documents in front pockets; not in back pockets or backpacks.

Handbags should be worn close to the body, with the strap falling across the chest. Keep a hand on the bag. Buy one of the stronger handbags sold by backpack companies.

If you have to put a backpack or handbag on the ground, put your foot through the strap.

Keep your camera out of sight.

Do not wear flashy jewelry. Do not wear clothes that mark you as a tourist. Be aware of where you walk. Go in pairs and stick together. Be observant, keeping an eye on the people around you.
